The awarded artist and street photography forerunner prints his new book at SiZ

SiZ Industria Grafica is proud to announce the visit in our company of Lee Friedlander from October 23th to 27th.

The photographer will go after the press run of his new book «Dog’s Best Friend, A Pet Project» published by SPQR Editions

The book features 100 photographs by the renowned American master, each focusing on a dog or dogs in a domestic context. The photographs cover a range of years from 1958 to the most recent in 2016.

As the title implies, Friedlander has focused his lens on the relationship between dog and owner or caretaker. His pictures show the role these precious pets play in our day-to-day lives.

Biography

Born in Aberdeen, Washington in 1934, Lee Friedlander began photographing at the age of fourteen, and built a darkroom soon thereafter. Working as a freelance photographer in the 1950s and early 1960s, he was hired to photograph for Columbia, RCA, and most notably, Atlantic Records, as well as publications like Esquire and Sports Illustrated. Around this time, he purchased his first Leica camera, and has been using the brand ever since.

In 1963, Friedlander had his first one-man show at the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York. A few years later, in 1967, Friedlander’s work was included in the highly influential New Documents exhibition, curated by John Szarkowski at the Museum of Modern Art, also featuring photographers Diane Arbus and Garry Winogrand. Two years later, he would publish his first of 50 books (to date), beginning a career of extraordinary photographic production.

Over the past five decades, Friedlander’s work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, as well as dozens of other museums, galleries, and institutions in the United States and around the world. In 2005, Friedlander was the subject of a major traveling retrospective and catalogue organized by the Museum of Modern Art, the first of its kind for a living photographer. His work is housed in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Museum, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and numerous other institutions. Among the many awards he has received are three Guggenheim Fellowships (1960, 1962, 1977), three National Endowment for the Arts Grants (1978, 1979, 1980), a Hasselblad Award (2005), an ICP Lifetime Achievement Infinity Award (2006), and a MacArthur Genius Grant (1990). He was also awarded honorary degrees from Yale University (2004), the University of Pennsylvania (2004), and Pratt Institute (2013).

In 2010, Yale University Art Gallery and Yale’s Beinecke Rare Books and Manuscripts Library acquired the Lee Friedlander Archive, which includes 2,000 of Friedlander’s master prints as well as negatives, working prints, letters, books and other articles cataloging his creative process and output, making it the world’s largest collection of Friedlander’s work.

At 83 years old, Friedlander continues to produce work, publishing multiple books and exhibiting his work nationally and internationally every year.

With this work, SiZ confirms its strength and experience in high-quality printing.
